#8 TRAVIS SMALL - South Carolina's #2 All-Time Leading Rusher

Cheraw’s Travis Small (#8) has rushed his way into the state’s record books for both career rushing yardage (7109) and career touchdowns scored (88).

The 7109 yards rushing has earns Travis the #2 spot on South Carolina’s All-Time Rushing list behind Lexington’s Demetris Summers (9076 yards) and ahead of Palmetto’s Derek Watson (6788 yards).  Likewise, Travis’ 88 touchdowns place him in a tie for the #2 slot on South Carolina’s career touchdown list.

Travis’s accomplishments have landed him in some very elite company but don’t worry #8 can hold his own. During his tenure at Cheraw, Travis helped led the Braves to 4 Region Championships, 3 Lower-State Championships, 2 State Championships, 1 Undefeated Season, a (16-2) playoff record, an (18-0) region record, and an overall mark of (50-8).

Several of the other running backs listed in the state’s record books played in the Shrine Bowl or the North-South All-Star game and some have went on to have good college careers and a few have even made it to the NFL but only one of these tremendous rushers ever won a state championship, Travis Small (2006 & 2007).

As Travis Small’s high school football career comes to an end it’s time to put his accomplishments into perspective. To say that Travis is a great high school running back would be correct but the statement would be incomplete. Travis is not only a great running back; he is also a great football player who started 58 consecutive games for the Braves despite numerous injuries. Many players have the talent to play and start on the high school varsity team for four years but very few have the ability to play at the level that Travis has during his career.

Battling a driving rainstorm that made playing conditions brutal for both teams, the Cheraw Braves dropped Charlotte Providence Day, 31-7.
Cheraw travelled to Charlotte for the first-ever meeting of the two schools, and early on appeared to be suffering a bit of a hangover from three straight losses.
On the Braves first possession, a special teams miscue set the home team up deep in their Braves' territory . The Charges quickly capitalized on a 19-yd. pass down the left side, taking a 7-0.
Cheraw responded with a TD run from two yards out by Montrell Evans at the 3:22 mark of the first quarter. A two-point conversion gave the Braves an 8-6 lead.
Ben Hutson
added a 21-yard field goal for Cheraw with 8:33 left in the second quarter and the Braves would go into the break leading 11-7.
In the second half the Braves showed flashes of the program that is the two-time defending 2A state champions. Senior Travis Small produced TD runs of 54, 13, and two yards as Cheraw ran away from the Chargers on Providence Day's homecoming night. Small ended the night with 214 yards rushing on 23 attempts. For the night the Braves churned out 386 yards of rushing as a team.
Cheraw Head Coach Johnny White said that the Providence Day team had a defensive scheme that early on kept the Braves in check.
"We kept plugging and I think we started to wear them down a bit later on," he said.
White said that his team was probably suffering a bit of a lack of confidence after the recent losses.
"I saw a few smiles in the huddle after the game though and maybe we're starting to get our confidence back," he added.
Cheraw (2-3) will open region play next week at Mullins.

CHERAW 7 Lake City 0
The Back-2-Back State Champion Braves took to the field tonight in game uniforms for the first time since last Decembers championship game and while several things have changed since then tonights outcome was the same - Braves win.

Lake City got the ball first, starting at their 30 yard line. The Panthers converted two third down plays and seemed to have something going until Kenyatta Gary's big hit for a 3 yard lose on a 4th & 3 play. The Braves offense took over on downs but couldn't get much going on the ground. Gray Stafford's completion to Travis Small on 3rd down was good for a 7 yard pick but wasn't enough and the Braves had to punt.

Lake City started their next drive on their 27 but a big pass completion on 3rd down set the Panthers up at the Braves 34. A couple of penalties, a big hit by Inyon Richardson, and a sack (Sammy Merriman and Chad Covington) forced a Lake City punt as the first quarter ended in a scoreless tie.

Cheraw took over at their 11 to start the second quarter. Small, Evans, Gary, and Merriman all had carries as the Braves converted  two 3rd down plays and one 4th down play on a 16 play scoring drive. Montrell Evans took it in from the 7 and Ben Hutson added the PAT to put the Braves on top 7-0 with 4:26 left in the contest.

Neither team could get much going on offense on their next possession.

The Panthers got one more chance on offense and seemed to have something going until Ben Hutson intercepted a Lake City pass at the Cheraw 7.

The Braves ran out the clock and held on for the 7-0 victory.

**Ben Hutson hit 3 field goals during the skills competition held just before tonights game including a 50 yarder.

CHERAW vs GEORGETOWN - SCRIMMAGE
Cheraw Football took the two hour plus trip to Georgetown to get some pre-season work in against former Cheraw and Carver's Bay coach Tyronne Davis' Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs offense took to the field first and they were quit an impressive looking unit, big linemen and athletic skill players. On Georgetown's first possession, the Braves "D" held them to (-5) yards on 13 plays.

Cheraw's offense got their turn and didn't waste any time as Travis Small snapped off a 70-yard TD run on their first play from scrimmage. Cheraw then scored once more on their opening series when Montrell Evans powered in from the 11-yard line to cap a 70-yard drive. Hutson added the PAT. Braves led 13-0

On Georgetown's 2nd offensive series they moved the ball down to the Cheraw 30 in 10 plays (aided by defensive pass interference). Gerald Ewing's interception ended the Bulldogs threat and forced them to start their drive at the Cheraw 30 but that was as close as they would get. Several big plays and big hits by Antonio McPherson, Sammy Merriman and the rest of the Cheraw "D" kept the Bulldogs guessing as they lost 15 yards on their next 4 plays.

Cheraw's 2nd possesion started well as Travis Small got loose for 23 yards but the play was called back because of a block in the back penalty. On the next play, Georgetown scored their first points of the scrimmage after intercepting a batted pass at the line of scrimmage and returning for the TD.

Cheraw continued on offense from their 30. Gray Stafford hit Gerald Ewing (diving catch) and Jerel Riley to gain some yards. Chad Wilkes then ripped off a 30-yard run and it appeared he would score but he was tripped up. Travis Small got loose and carried the ball down to the Bulldog 11 but another block in the back negated a big gain. The Braves had several big plays in this series but could not overcome the penalties and did not score.

Georgetown took over on offense on their 40 and moved down to our 30 (aided by pass interference penalty) to start their drive. The Bulldog quarterback completed a pass for TD. Bulldogs score their first offensive points of the scrimmage.

On Cheraw's next offensive series, business really picked up. The Braves went with Austin Nolan at quarterback. Three plays into the possession, Nolan picked up 12 yards on the ground but was nailed by several of the Georgetown players along their sideline. The Bulldogs really started talking some series smack at this point and the Braves answered. Travis Small rambled for 50 yards down to the 10 but a block in the back penalty moved the ball back to the Georgetown 40. The scrimmage got real physical from this point forward as the Braves offense kicked it into high gear. On the next play (play #8 of series) Gray Stafford hit Jonathan White in stride for a 25 yard TD. Hutson added the PAT.
Cheraw's offense then started at their own 30. Montrell Evans ripped off a punishing 15 yard gain to move the ball out to the Braves 45 to start the drive. Travis Small had a 30 yard carry and refused to go down but was finally forced out at the Bulldog 25. Evans then added another punishing burst down to the 11 but Sammy Merriman would cap the drive with three straight hard runs to add the TD.

Georgetown couldn't get anything going on their last offensive possession but the Braves would add one more score when Ben Hutson went in from 25 yards out.

The Cheraw Braves Football team took a giant step toward defending their Class AA State Crown by defeating the Central Eagles 17-0. With the win, The Braves wrap up the Region VIII AA Title and home field advantage through round three of the Class AA Playoffs.

The Braves took the opening kick-off and put together an impressive drive capped by Travis Small's 40-yard run to pay dirt. Ben Hutson's PAT was good and The Braves led 7-0.

Central's offense started their opening drive deep in their own territory but managed to march right down the field. Cheraw's "D" stopped Central on fourth down at the Cheraw eleven-yard line and The Braves' offense went back to work. BRAVES DOWN SWAMP FOXES 49-14
The Cheraw Braves hosted the Marion Swamp Foxes tonight at Meiklejohn in a battle of (1-2) teams; both coming off upset loses in hopes of getting back to (.500) on the young season. The Braves really took it to the Swamp Foxes in last years contest leading 28-0 at the half on their way to a 35-19 win.

The Braves took the opening kick-off and needed just 3 plays to jump on top 7-0 as Travis Small rumbled in from 32 yards out. Marion could not get much going on offense in the first quarter and the score remained 7-0 until Jaron Brown scored (pass from J. Henderson) in the second after Brown intercepted a Gause pass. Cheraw’s offense added another score, set up by Taylor Fisher’s interception of Gause, when Josh Henderson scrambled 30 yards to increase the lead to 21-0 at the half.

Cheraw outscored Marion 28 to 6 in the third to increase the lead to 49 - 6.  Marion added 8 in the final quarter but this one was all Cheraw as The Braves gained over 570 yards of total offense.

“I felt like we did a good job on both the offensive and defensive lines. We were able to control the line of scrimmage and open up some holes for our running backs. On defense, we bent a little bit here and there, but overall we made good plays and got a lot of penetration,” said Coach Johnny White.

The Darlington Falcons traveled to Meiklejohn tonight looking for their 1st win of the season in hopes of exploiting the Cheraw "D" as Marlboro did in week 1 but the Falcons got a little more than they bargained for. They (Darlingtion) got a heavy dose of Cheraw Football; offense, defense, special teams, it made no matter which group was on the field - The Braves came to play.
The Defending AA State Champion Braves were sporting new jerseys but everything else remained the same as The Braves' defense swarmed to the ball causing 3 turnovers and the offense scored on every first half possession.
The Braves made it look easy scoring 17 points in the 1st quarter and 21 more in the second quarter to lead 38-0 at the half. Darlington got on the board in the fourth to prevent the shutout but this one was all Cheraw, 44-7.

Travis Small 7/95yards, 1 TDs
Jaron Brown 170 All Purpose Yards, 2 TDs
Montrell Evans 2 TDs
Taylor Fisher 1 TD

Bulldogs Outlast Braves
Cheraw traveled to Marlboro County tonight as The Defending AA State Champion Braves open the 2007 regular season on the road. The Braves come in to this game having won three straight against the Bulldogs and have not lost a regular season game since August of 2005. But still some questions about this version of Braves Football due to the fact that this would be the first time that some of the key components have played in a game situation since last year’s State Championship.

Lower-State Championship Rematch
Braves Football took a road trip tonight traveling down Highway 9 to face the Dillon Wildcats in their jamboree for a rematch of last year's Lower State Championship. The offense struggled however, coughing up three turnovers, which led to 14 points for the Wildcats. The Braves had a few bright spots and the defense played pretty well considering the fact that Dillon had the short field most of the contest. The turnovers proved to be the difference as Dillon holds on to win 14-7.

CHERAW GETS OFFENSIVE QUICKLY
Cheraw did not waste any time showing some offensive firepower scoring 22 points in just 6 plays against the McBee Panthers in the 1st Annual Founders Federal Credit Union Jamboree. The Braves scored on all three possessions (2 plays, 1 play, 3 plays), mixing up the run and pass nicely. McBee put together a scoring drive in the second quarter and used some ball control offense to keep the score respectable at 22-6. The Braves will play Dillon tomorrow night at 9:00pm in Dillon.
